Barometers have changed the life as these allow us to measure the atmospheric pressure by a simple principle. Most of the barometers come with a round body and dial face and these have aneroid cell that changes its form as the atmospheric pressure increases.
In return, the pressure changes the position of the dial. The barometric pressure gauge is expressed usually in kilo Pascal units and it allows easy reading and further analysis thanks to the measurement units.
How did the barometer come to exist?
Evangelista Torricelli invented the first barometer in 1643 when he used a closed tube filled with mercury. The tube was placed in the shallow but open pod that was also containing mercury. Once the tube was opened, mercury would go out.
However, instead of filling out the entire pod, mercury stopped flowing at about one-third of the pod. After thinking and analyzing, Torricelli did conclude that the atmospheric pressure was stopping the mercury to flow out. It was the point of barometer’s birth and in a couple of years, the first barometers were available for commercial use. At that time, having a barometer in your home would be a sign of nobility. Years after, George Washington did start recording barometric pressure on a daily basis. This was a forerunner to the weather reports that we have today.
The types of barometers
As the ages were advancing, people were upgrading the devices to get precise readings and accurate predictions. From the liquid-based one, to the electronic that offers amazingly precise readings. In a nutshell, there are 3 types: mercury, aneroid and electronic. Mercury ones are the original devices that were used in the beginning, but as soon as mercury’s deadly characteristics were discovered, the scientists replaced this type of barometer with aneroid type.
It was the first non-liquid device that was placed in a metal box, made out of copper and alloy of beryllium. Any change in atmospheric pressure would expand the box, which would move mechanical levers and indicate the change of weather/pressure.
The latest and still used type is electronic. The best part about electronics is that these offer you precise sensors that can track the elevation above the sea. These come with a gauge that records electric resistance, which is the sign of atmospheric pressure change. The change reads voltage that you can amplify to display the data readable to a human.
How to predict weather using a barometer?
Over time, scientists performed a countless number of experiments and measurements before they proved that the low atmospheric pressure indicates rain and storms. At the same time, the high atmospheric pressure is a clear indicator of the sunny weather without any rain. So, following these easy pre-determined constants, we can predict the upcoming weather.
As there are a lot of barometers, some of these offer more precise measurements while some have less accurate measurements. Therefore, professional weather stations use advanced devices and other attributes to determine the weather for the upcoming period.
